Open mic night is pretty much what it reads on the tin - open. Do I ask to hear a song to make sure it's not going to clear the bar, sure. But I did mean it when I said it's all kinds of skills and abilities. If you and Quaid (I'm guessing?) are thinking of trying for a more permanent spot, then yes, I would need to hear a set just to be sure.
It makes sense, we all had to keep moving and adapt to survive. Maybe had to become different people because of it. It's just a rediscovery then, I don't think anything from before is fully gone.
I've always been a violinist or a fiddler depending on the genre. Fortunately, that's the instrument I still have left (I'm not counting the ukulele I use to entertain kids). I got a scholarship for it, way back when.
A scholarship? So you're a very accomplished violinist. That's impressive, Emmett. I really look forward to hearing you play. And I wouldn't underplay the ukulele, I am envisioning a very sweet and intimate night at the bar with Over the Rainbow.
Not a thing or a tune. Artistry gave me a complete miss I'm afraid.
Well if you need excitement in your life. Or you could just choose not to be a part of the drama like I do, and let it happen all around you instead. A personal tv show.
I don't feel like I was missing out on anything, but it does feel good to put skills to actual use. I'm not very good at sitting on my hands.
Neither have I, I mostly let my energy and low tolerance for bullshit carry me through. People seem to respond to the witch rumours; scientists are mad.
Well don't say it out loud, they might actually appear.

Something to think about though. Thank you.

But point taken.

What was your favourite instrument to play?
DM, 10/28
Do you play anything? Sing?

That's all right. I'm sure what you do have is more useful.
DM, 10/28
Useful in a very specific way, useless in others. I definitely know my limitations, you probably got a show of them earlier.
DM, 10/28
Your skills must be pretty important if you're in charge, though.
DM, 10/28
I am uniquely skilled for what Whitney needs, yes. The chemist to brewer/bar owner pipeline is less of a stretch than you'd think.

Arguably one of the most important jobs there is right now. You're singlehandedly keeping morale and socialization afloat for the whole Quad.
DM, 10/28
Okay, let's not exaggerate things here. Although if you'd known me before you have no idea how hilarious a statement that it.
DM, 10/28
Why? You used to be a Debbie Downer or something?
DM, 10/28
No, I've always been pretty social. I just spent most of my time in a lab, not exactly as cruise director.
DM, 10/28
Maybe this is you making up for lost time, then.

I don't think most of us are. We'd all have expired a long time ago if we were.
DM, 10/28
That's an interesting supposition, I do wonder about the correlation between certain personality types and survival.

Perhaps there's a sociologist among us who might have some insight.
DM, 10/28
Well don't say it out loud, they might actually appear.
DM, 10/28
If they actually met our groups, they'd probably run.
DM, 10/28
I think the apocalypse probably produced some self taught sociologists. They're probably lurking somewhere right now. Waiting. Observing.
